Complacency catches up with everybody from time to time, but when it comes to the safety of yourself and others, you have to find ways to combat this dangerous habit. Thyssenkrupp Elevator as a company values the safety of employees and the general public above all else. One way that we as a company battle complacency is by making safety the first topic of every internal meeting. This not only helps by providing valuable information on several areas of work/personal life, but it also shows employees that safety comes first. With this in mind, I felt it fitting that our first blog with IREM cover safety.
An escalator is, quite simply, a moving staircase. Escalators help move pedestrian traffic between floors in high traffic areas. While they only provide short distance trips, escalators have been a major mode of transportation since the first was installed in 1896. You can find an escalator in many public places nowadays including airports, shopping malls, stadiums, and even some hotels. With the rise in popularity of the escalator in everyday life the number of escalator related accidents has also seen an increase, especially in large, developed cities like Houston. Remembering the following tips while riding can help to keep you and the ones that you love safe.
1. Children should always hold an adult’s hand and the handrail.
2. Do not allow children to horseplay while riding an escalator.
3. Always stand and face forward when riding (never sit down).
4. Always check to make sure shoelaces are tied tightly before boarding.
5. Always grab the handrail when you step on and keep holding it until you step off.
6. Always keep your hands, feet, and clothing away from the sides.
7. Always move away from the end of an escalator quickly so others can get off safely.
8. Never walk or run while riding.
9. Never let your feet slide off the end.
10. Escalators are not meant to move wheelchairs, strollers, or carts.
Following these guidelines will significantly reduce the chance of an accident while riding on an escalator. Remember, the biggest threat to safety is complacency. Always be aware of your surroundings and use common sense when considering the danger involved in your actions.
